Toh Cheon Lilac House, vitalizing the neighborhood amid the jumbled surrounding
Toh Sang-bong, the Lilac Painter
Toh Cheon Lilac House, where Toh Sang-bong lived and worked, is one of the birthplaces of Korean Modern Western painting. After settling down there in 1930, Toh began to get acquainted with prominent painters of the time such as Kim Whan-ki and Chun Kyung-ja, while teaching students about Modern Western painting. Though he has now long passed away, his descendants have been living in the same house for four generations.
Toh Kyu-young, grandson of Toh Sang-bong, wanted to move out of the house built in 1970s as it had become worn and its living environment got poor due to the high-density multi household houses rapidly encroaching upon the surrounding neighborhood.
However, taking account of the value and importance of the old house, I, an old friend of Toh Kyu-young and architect, suggested a small memorial hall for Toh Sang-bong, which could also can be used as a residential house.
Between Sungkyunkwan and Changdeokgung Palace
The site is located between Sungkyunkwan and the Changdeokgung Palace. Established over a long period of time and having been effected by the surrounding historical buildings, the town displays a sense of calmness and sentiment through its atmosphere. Whereas the adjacent landscape surrounding the house seems somewhat messy, as it is randomly pervaded by different-sized volumes untidily covered by cheap materials and extended with no decent strategy. Amid this jumbled scene, the Toh Cheon Lilac House has been designed to appear with a simple and humble background, a barrier screening visual noises from surrounding areas and a close-range picture of Sungkyunkwan.
A background and an object
As the house is both a residential unit and a memorial hall, an ambivalent system is applied to the structure, spatial arrangement and to the volume. The living area, facing closely neighboring buildings, appears as a simple and humble background and embraces the inner court with its ‘L’ shape. On the other hand, the atelier is a small deformed object aligned along the street’s flow, and its look varies with the lights and the seasons. This small house shows itself as an object, created to revive the image of Toh Sang-bong’s atelier, and also to give life and character to the emotionless neighborhood.
