STUDIO MINORORMAJOR aimed to transform a series of abandoned warehouse structures – in the outskirts of Gwangju, in Gyeonggi Province, Korea – into a new and vibrant space.
The resulting proposal worked to maintain, as much as possible, the appearance that the structures had obtained over the passage of time, whilst at the same time creating a space where people would have new experiences.
On their first site visit to the warehouse buildings, the studio members were strongly reminded of cactuses in a desert climate. In the same way that cactuses develop needles to survive in arid and barren environments, the existing buildings on the project site seemed sharp, stiff, and unwelcoming – inevitably discouraging people from using them.
Using the same metaphor, the architects were, however, inspired by the fact that cactuses are filled with life on the inside, despite their harsh appearance. Consequently, the designs for the warehouses give them a new vitality, using the cactus parallel as a motif.
The goal of the design program was for the warehouse structures to be interpreted as one organic life form. The project’s name “Seoninjang” means “cactus” in Korean. The newly bestowed life energy of the structures was expressed through the use of water and light.

The 220m2 warehouse now comprises a café and lounge. By placing a number of water spaces in the center of the interior, people are able to flow or circulate freely. The small warehouse of 140m2, used as a studio and a gallery, is a place which holds light, with motifs of small seeds in the dark ground preparing to emerge.
On the side of the large warehouse is a bridge which leads to the roof of the guardian’s house. This gives users access to a rooftop garden with a water space. The entire building, therefore, becomes one interconnected organism.

The café building was visualized as the image of a cactus, with transparent green polycarbonate panels; the other buildings on the site retained their original appearance. The difference in aesthetic, which reveals the buildings’ history, naturally gives a strong contrast to the interior spaces which have been revitalized, further enhancing their value.
