Human-oriented for the new typology of factory buildings
Factories used to be spaces for machines, until now. But the era of the ‘efficiency of machine = productivity’ equation is over. It is time to focus on the human. It is useful here to cite the case of a cosmetic manufacturing factory in France: the client, as if he already communed with this idea, hoped workers in the production line would enjoy nature as much as possible while they are working.
In order to create a human-oriented factory, an unconventional factory plan was proposed comprising of a mixed flow between materials used and personnel, a new factory model which separates them horizontally by planning personnel flow outside of the material flow. The exposed corridor is an important element in enabling workers to enjoy surrounding nature while they pass, making the factory look like an art gallery. Avoiding the traditional horizontal layout for production such as manufacturing and packaging, and the research supporting section, such as the administrative office and R&D center, the vertical layout of the production line and the supporting research area could compose an efficient flow system by preventing conflict between material flow and personnel flow.
Nature is introduced to reorganize machine-oriented space into human-oriented space. Preserving the green at the front of the building in a similar urban scale allows it to play the role of a visual oasis, functioning as a lung for not only this factory but also for the neighboring desolate industrial complex. Inserting this garden as a courtyard mediates the relation between humans and nature. The main finishing material is a urethane panel in two colors, of exposed concrete, and a wooden trim. The lower part of the production area is finished with a dark urethane panel, and the lower part for supporting facilities by a lighter panel. The vertical flow is exposed to the outside, finished by exposed concrete and walls around the inserted courtyard, which are finished with wooden trim. The finishing materials of each part reveal their function. The simplicity of the building is further reinforced by the logical use of materials.
