K Residence – 3 Twisted Plots; Kang residence combines home, workspace and workshop
The client was a filmmaker who wanted a new home that was at once a weekend space for his family, a personal workspace, and a workshop to share with his staff members. In other words, it was not a typical house for telecommuting. The sloped site was surrounded by a rather colorless neighborhood of dense, run-of-the-mill houses.
What came to mind for the architects was “The Un-Private House” exhibition held at MoMA in 1999, which presented the history of residences as a tendency to construct private spaces. Its diagnosis was that in contemporary times, these tendencies evolved into a preference for neutral space, a realm that goes beyond issues of privacy.
Since the project was not a full time residence and was to be used as a variable work space, it was possible suggest an alternative model of a residence, one that no longer adhered to the typical composition with dividing walls. A long and narrow spatial type spread along the site seemed ideal for the program, but considering the site conditions and regulations, the only possible solution was a densely stacked spatial structure.
The architects proposed three strips of neutral spaces – one for personal use, the other for the client’s family, and the third for staffs – compressed and twisted within a certain boundary. The three linear volumes were basically independent but also intersected in unexpected places. Partitions dividing the internal spaces were minimized, as functional divisions could be made in corners without the use of walls. Numerous alternative schemes were reviewed to find a solution that could at once fulfill the fundamental functions of a home and a workplace.
After placing the three volumes, thin supplementary spaces were added, and the modularization of the whole scheme finalized the design. Each linear volume was differentiated by window patterns and finishing methods of concrete. Eventually, it became a structure in which three volumes and three ways of life were combined within a single mass. The designers’ proposal was a new type of residence, a collective form of differences, where spatial twists aim not for privacy of spaces but tranquil interactions among heterogeneous patterns of life.
