Inje Residence, Seolak Mountain; A contemporary residence makes use of a traditional Korean courtyard arrangement to maximize the potential of a hilly site

One of the main challenges in designing this villa, which is located in the foothills of Seolak Mountain, was to respond to the context of its site. Given the hillside location, the solution was to adapt an ancient design – that of a traditional Korean courtyard. In line with the natural topography, four stepped volumes are arranged to form a courtyard. The 400m2 house, with five beds and four baths, has four wings: a master suite wing, a living and dining wing, a kitchen and amenity wing, and a guest and gallery wing.

The internal courtyard, which the volumes look onto, accommodates various family activities. It also provides a mountain view through its center opening, which enhances the quiet and contemplative aura and avoids the unpleasing view of a neighboring tomb and the adjacent hut.
In keeping with the Korean courtyard style, local and natural materials were used, which were also cost-effective. The Korean ‘giwa’, a form of ceramic tile used in old traditional roof construction, was applied on the walls, kneaded with a specially colored mortar to emphasize the horizontality of the façade, along with the overhanging local granite stone roofs.
This traditional yet modernized design also made use of sustainable and passive design strategies. Instead of using oil- or LPG-generated heating systems, which consume large amounts of energy, a more efficient geothermal system was adapted by digging down 154m into the ground. A grass rooftop acts as insulation and helps avoid heat buildup, substantially reducing the energy consumption and cost of maintenance.
The four volumes are positioned at different levels in order to respond to the sloped site; spatially, each volume is arranged in the form of Korean traditional houses. The living quarter is divided into sections, as the individual volumes are separated by outdoor spaces. The corridor is a mediator between outdoor and indoor space; as these four integrated volumes are positioned at different heights, various levels of openings are deployed. In the construction, continuous wall girders with horizontal beams lift the structure to create voids; these are openings for the entryway and garages, to allow light in and provide views outwards. Each opening frames a new boundary, and brings with it a new relationship between the indoor and outdoor space.
