Hakhyunsa; Kim Youngjoon’s sectional juxtaposition to accommodate offices and cultural productions for a publishing company at Paju Book city
The office building, for Hakhyunsa, was built at the end of the first stage of Paju Book City, as one of the projects that replaced some of the city’s urban infrastructure which had been planned but later abolished. (In this case, the site was initially conceived as a part of a telecommunications office site.) As such, its design had to be implemented hand in hand with modifications on the city’s architectural design guidelines, while maintaining continuity.

The programs requested by Hakhyunsa (Yangseowon Publishing Group) took up only about one third of the building volume suggested by the city’s architecture guidelines. The architects proposed a larger volume, considering the size of the site, the design guidelines, and a prospective program that reflected the client’s long-term vision. The project demanded far more than providing solutions to a publishing company’s regular programs: what was required was a structure of maximum openness, catalyzing a variety of cultural productions while simultaneously dealing with uncertain and indeterminate conditions.
In devising an architecture that is no longer program-based, the usual solution is to provide stacks of reserved spaces open to future use. Here the designers decided to go beyond this, so the challenge was in the choice of the design criteria – not a methodology for dealing with program, but a creative conception and reification of an open structure for culture.

Architect Kim Youngjoon recalled the principles of long-term investigations on ‘architecture with an urban organization’, presented in many earlier projects. Debates on architectural solutions for uncertain conditions often resemble issues of urban scale projects. From the premises concerning multiple approaches, flexible outlooks, and indeterminate conclusions, to the relative positioning between artificial/natural and solid/void, these factors were to be translated into a collective system for architecture, and it seemed to the architects that such a process was not unlike a task of converting an urban idea into an architectural one.

A collective system of two-story office units was proposed. Considering the usual size of office units, it was possible to juxtapose, within the site, three volumes of office units of appropriate width. Each volume, consisting of three two-story units in height, including the basement floor, was organized in section as a twisted continuum, set differently from one another. By situating these three different sectional organizations side by side, an overall structure was set in plan and section.
The design was ultimately a task of collecting office units with different sizes, and this was made possible by a plan divided into three parts with diverse sections. That is, organizations of independent double-story units in three different sectional compositions, and their juxtaposition, were proposed as an architectural strategy for indeterminate conditions. Avoiding a collective form of repetitive unit-spaces, the designers offered a complex collective system that embraced stacked density, various spatial scales, and independent interconnections.
