The building functions as art gallery and a residential space. It holds diverse programs to reflect the owner’s long years of experience in running art gallery.
The site was located one block from the main thoroughfare in an area lodged between a downtown and a residential neighborhood where one must meet the challenge of adopting to the duality of competing scales and images. Additionally, because the site was a corner lot, one had to carefully accommodate the programmatic requirements for both the exhibition space and the residential space without intentionally restricting/compromising the integrity of either.
First, in defining the relationship between the building and the site, The architect strove to maximize the greatest potential use of the lot located within a city planning context and to maintain control by designing the building and the site to be read as a single solid building block that contains both the filled space and the void. Resolution of the building and site relationship in this manner created an inseparable association between inner space and outer space which makes the void area just as meaningful a part of the building as the filled space.
Consequently, the basic architectural intent was to express the dual characteristics inherent in the site and the functional requirement by separating the line of circulation accoding to different functional demands.
In developing the space, the parking area was placed on the ground floor in order to allow effective use of the basement space as an exhibition area. The main entrance to the gallery has been placed on the second floor which becomes the central floor. In addition to the parking area on the ground floor, a part of the ground floor and the basement have been designed to function as the main exhibition areas. Furthermore. A mezzanine located on the third floor as well as the fourth floor each contains gallery office and special exhibition areas for clients.
Residential space is located on fifth, sixth and seventh floors which are reduced in areas due to angled-line building restrictions. The inner and the outer space were connected by locating a courtyard in the void space located on the north. Entrance to both the residential apace and the gallery is accessible from the second floor through an outer staircase on the first floor. The line of flow splits on the second floor between the private and the public spaces.

For the residential space, the main focus was placed on providing balanced light and cross ventilation for bright and pleasant living atmosphere. Position and sizes of windows were carefully planned in various ways to allow for enjoyment of scenery within a deliberate composition.
The original plan for finishing material was limestone which for economic reasons were changed to base panels that have been cut into smaller pieces for installation. Base panel is a material that has very strong characteristics. By choosing to use the base panels in smaller cut sizes, the impression of subtle composition was secured. The building’s totality and its physicality were emphasized through use of materials that feels neutral in a restrained manner.
Continuous curtain glass wall on windows faces the two void spaces within the building. Contrast between the clearness of glass and the outer finishing material that feels like a thick skin repeats the continuing theme of close relationship between solid and void.
There are three mechanical details that have been designed to allow functional flexibility of the building usage; the skylight on top of the basement space, the bridge in the courtyard and the exhibition wall in the basement. For ventilation and for moving large-scale art work, the skylight has been designed to operate by remote-control as is the bridge which moves along the rail installed in the courtyard.
Everyone has suspended memory.
The building is defined by the clarity of space, variedness of experience and gravity of geometric interplay within the meditative contemplation and controlled reflection.
