Chasm; Studio Asylum create a physical manifestation of alienation by introducing splits and chasms into a building’s design
The specific site for this combined programs of private architecture, relatively compact in its size, takes one of the regularly sliced lots in a quite suitably established suburban compound of similar kinds. Unique and exclusive in such aspects as its scenes and settings, objectives, programs, contents and even its occupants, this village named Heyri already has become an internationally acclaimed cultural community. The place itself apparently did not provide the clues enough to launch thoughts and ideas for the journey of rendering forms and images in this scheme. Neither any specific tensions or references around the site seemed to be perceivable righthand, nor any preliminary contexts or indications to interpret at the initial stages of the design. Put in other words, the given lot alone might as well even be regarded just as a blank margin among the ‘blank’ in terms of peripheral or external approaches to this project.
Now as part of a subsequent and alternative measure, and as is mostly typical with this type of deadlock an internal way of logics and reasoning had to be brought up in my mind. Linguistically driven development of forms, images, and spatial languages as well as interpretations of the given program constantly intervene in the materializing procedure of the scheme; utilizing the fundamental ‘thematic’ term as the primary generator. The term I forged this time as the theme word was ‘chasm’ to integrate all the issues and requirements, and even limitations and restrictions latent within the program and the place. Entire process was supposed to be anchored upon its own group of meanings referring to such words as alienation, breach, cavity, cleavage, hollow, opening, hiatus, skip, gorge, void, split, etc. I suppose that three different discrepancies, implications or narratives intrinsic in this particular incident of architecture provided major sources to personally coin that word at the beginning;
1. The community that this site is registered to initially maintained some ten years ago the notion that it has an extremely idyllic setting where these days there appears to be some missing senses of relativity, among the proposed natural topography, open spaces, verdure, visual distinctness, rural life, vegetations, sense of occupancy, building density, and even the communal activities and events within, etc.
2. Presumably a quite potential amount of friction, incompatibility, interferences, alienations lies even among these proposed programs-residences, plats, workshops, exhibition spaces, offices, coffee and wine stands, etc regardless of their apparently manageable sizes and figures.
3. Distinctively enough, the owner couple, so much sophisticated individuals, for this commission tend to exhibit highly clear senses and notions of distances, or furthermore of alienations in some areas from the capitalistic banality or vanity flooding on the current society.

Variety of chasms derived from the symbolic, semantic and experiential terms here are supposed to be practically put under the process of transcriptions to actual visual and spatial languages and terms. Mainly peripheral devices to generate immediate senses of spaces could be recognized as a few mentionable output of the transcriptional process of the thematic term ‘chasm’ ; such as a large linear reflecting pool cutting across the entire structure, three different approaches indicated through irregular cleavages, relatively tiny, hidden slits in northern facets, two of the larger cutaway openings in southern facets, three different types of decks exclusively open upward to the sky, a corner protrusion of the window, two top-lights, an upper floor bridge between the two ‘alienated’ masses, etc.
